Gaza Aid Appeal

The BBC and Skye media corporations refused to air an aid appeal made by the Disaster Emergency Committee to help people facing awful conditions in the war torn Gaza. The Aid Appeal that starts with "Today, this is not about the rights and wrongs of the conflict. These people simply need your help." was turned down by both the BBC and Sky News because they saw it would jeopardise their imartiality.

Watch the appeal and know about the full story here:

Cycling in Alexandria

Facebook can sometimes be very useful. Last summer a group of young people in Alexandria started a group on facebook called Cycling in Alexandria Streets (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=26660188676) and the purpose was to encourage people in Alexandria to starting using bicycle as a means of transportation. They organized a ride every Saturday in the morning on the coastline of the city of Alexandria. There have been several rides since the start and one of these was in support of the MDGs. I’ve admired the idea since the start. In many of the big cities, bicycles are a standard means of transportation for a wide portion of the population. Either it’s for economic reasons (like in Asia) or for environmental or health reasons (like in Europe), going to wok by bicycle is certainly a metropolitan best-practice that we need to adopt in our congested, polluted (and yet beautiful) city.
Because of exams or being outside the city (once in Copenhagen which has impressive amount of people riding bicycles) I was unable to join the ride. Only today that I managed to join for the first time - and it won’t be the last for sure. I enjoyed very much the 18-kilometre ride from Muntazah (the largest park in Alexandria) to the Citadel (that’s about 800 years old). Although my leg muscles still ache, I’m feeling better and more willing to work. Despite the mocking from many of the passer-bys, safety was the only real issue. I really hope that with the growth of this movement, the government will recognize the importance of adding a special lane for bicylces.

Jewish Women Occupy Israeli Consulate in Toronto

The genocide taking place in Gaza has split the world acutely into 2 classes; Politicians and non-Politicians. Those in Politics had their shameful 'neutral' stance and every other person with consience had an opposite stance. This is one of the cases that suggest that their might be a little hope in the future of this world...

Jewish Women Occupy Israeli Consulate in Toronto

Toronto: Wednesday January 8, 2009 Time: 10:25 am

A diverse group of Jewish Canadian women are currently occupying the Israeli consulate at 180 Bloor Street West in Toronto. This action is in protest against the on-going Israeli assault on the people of Gaza.

The group is carrying out this occupation in solidarity with the 1.5 million people of Gaza and to ensure that Jewish voices against the massacre in Gaza are being heard. They are demanding that Israel end its military assault and lift the 18-month siege on the Gaza Strip to allow humanitarian aid into the territory.

Israel has been carrying out a full-scale military assault on the Gaza Strip since December 27, 2008. At least 660 people have been killed and 3000 injured in the air strikes and in the ground invasion that began on January 3, 2009. Israel has ignored international calls for a ceasefire and is refusing to allow food, adequate medical supplies and other necessities of life into the Gaza Strip.

Protesters are outraged at Israel's latest assault on the Palestinian people and by the Canadian government's refusal to condemn these massacres. They are deeply concerned that Canadians are hearing the views of pro-Israel groups who are being represented as the only voice of Jewish Canadians. The protesters have occupied the consulate to send a clear statement that many Jewish-Canadians do not support Israel's violence and apartheid policies. They are joining with people of conscience all across the world who are demanding an end to Israeli aggression and justice for the Palestinian people.

The group includes: Judy Rebick, professor; Judith Deutsch, psychoanalyst and president of Science for Peace; B.H. Yael, filmmaker; Smadar Carmon, an Canadian Israeli peace activist and others.

Spokespersons for the group will be outside the Israeli consulate: Dr. Miriam Garfinkle: 416-731-6605 mgarfinkle@sympatico.ca Cathy Gulkin: 416-697-0768 cgulkin@rogers.com

Assault on Gaza and World Conscience

Since last Saturday Israeli Army has been bombarding the tiny Gaza strip day and night leaving till this moment about 450 dead and more than 2500 wounded.

Less than 3 weeks from that Saturday the world was celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. While it says at its beginning that ‘All humans are born equal’ the celebrators don’t seem to agree very much on that. Till now the UN hasn’t done anything to materialize its sacred concept and its powerful hand (Security Council) has gone mute while the Zionist state is assaulting Gaza from Air, Water and Land.

It is a big frustration that not a single Western Nation has even detained what’s happening pointing clearly to the criminal. Only the hypocritical call of composure between Israel & Hamas and the even worse – blaming it totally on Hamas.

For anyone who hasn’t notice, for 8 days war ships and jets have been going around and over Gaza. If a real military power existed in the miserable strip, wouldn’t it have fired against these hostile bodies? But no! The rockets fired on south of Israel are what incited all of this. A blunt lies. And a silly one too. In 8 years, all hamas rockets have killed 20 people in Israel!!

While people everywhere has been signing petitions and going in rallies nothing is changing on ground. Tens of people are killed every day and no one is stopping the crazy death machine. In a few hours, the hospitals will run out of fuel and there will be no electricity which will exacerbate the already horrible picture. In addition, the 150 km square Gaza is so crowded that people can find no place to hide from the bombs showering their heads.

If anything has been learned from this catastrophe, it is that we live in a very hypocritical and immoral world where politicians stink and survival is reserved for the fiercest!
