On reading the title, I guess that the people from Sustainable Development Association (SDA) will think that I'll be talking about their organisation. Actually, I won't…just keep reading and you'll find that yourself!
Basically, the food we ingest belong to one of three categories; proteins, carbohydrates and lipids (fats). Of course each item that you eat will contain more than one component of the three and may all of them. Anyway, each one of these categories has got a property which is called 'Specific Dynamic Action' or SDA.
This phenomenon is defined as the energy that is liberated from the body on eating any sort of food. It's in the form of waste heat. This is observed as how your face flushes and you feel heat when you eat a big meal. The mechanism of this heat production isn't fully explained but it's definitely not from the burning (oxidation) of the food you've just eaten because this food take at least 3 hours to be digested, absorbed and then oxidised.
The SDA of different food stuffs is different. It's the biggest for proteins and let's put this in numbers:
Proteins increase metabolic rate (heat production) by 30%. That's to say, if your body requires 3000 calories per day and you eat amount of protein that would exactly provide this amount of energy, metabolic rate will be increased to provide extra 900 (30% of 3000) calories. So that the total heat production will be 3900 calories and the extra heat produced rather than that provided by ingested food, this extra energy will be driven from food stores in the body, e.g. Fat.
This is made value of in the people on a diet who want to lose weight. Eating proteins mainly will help them in their mission.
On the other hand, carbohydrates and fats have low SDAs that mount to 6% and 4% respectively.
I'm writing this on the occasion that TIG is celebrating food as a monthly theme these days. I thought that this was an interesting piece of information. I hope I haven't caused boredom to everyone who have read that and if it happened that someone has had any interest in the subject and something was vague in the article, I'd like to see them asking for any clearing up.
Eat only healthy food and keep away from junk! ):
